The cheapest roofing quote is almost never the best value. When you compare three bids and one is $3,000–$5,000 below the others, something is being left out. Here’s what to look for — and why cutting corners on a roof is the most expensive kind of savings.

What’s Typically Missing

Starter strips: These go along the eaves before the first course of shingles. Without them, wind can lift the bottom edge — voiding your wind warranty.
Drip edge: Metal flashing along eaves and rakes that directs water into gutters. Required by building code, frequently skipped by budget crews.
Ice and water shield: Self-adhering membrane in valleys and around penetrations. The most critical waterproofing layer — and the most commonly omitted to save cost.
Proper ventilation: Adding or repairing ridge vents and soffit vents. Skipping this means your new shingles cook from below.
Nail count: Manufacturers require 4–6 nails per shingle in specific zones. Under-nailing saves time but voids your warranty.
Cleanup: Magnetic nail sweep, gutter cleaning, landscape restoration. Budget crews leave nails in your yard and debris in your gutters.

How to Compare Quotes Properly

Ask every contractor for an itemized scope of work that lists: shingle brand/model, underlayment type, ice and water shield locations, starter strips, drip edge, ridge caps, ventilation, nail pattern, cleanup process, and warranty terms. Compare line by line — not just the bottom number.
